The Survival Guide of Being Single On Valentine's Day

Not everybody is a fan of Valentine's Day. Couples might be fond of this event because of many reasons. It is a good day for exchanging flowers, cards and even loving sentiments. Whether it is in a form of admiration, affection or even infatuation. Valentine's Day caters them all. But for millions of people out there, this can only be possible if they have dates. Being single and dateless on Valentine's Day can actually make a person lonely and can even feel self-doubt. Hopeless romantic people are often victims of this. But what can a person do if he/she is feeling cold during this warm love month?

Honestly, if you are to ask me, love doesn't really have to depend on a day of the year. Valentine's Day has merely become a sensationalized holiday for couples and for those who are in love when technically, it can be Valentine's Day every day if you want it to be. Actually, couples can celebrate their love every day and not just once a year. But I do understand as to why some people want to celebrate something special on Valentine's Day. But don't worry; Valentine's Day is not just for couples but for everyone. There are actually many ways on how single men and women can enjoy Valentine's Day without worrying about the pressures and pitfalls that often come with this holiday:

Do not define yourself by your relationship status

Remember that your relationship is not who you are. Don't give people the right to judge you by being single or being in a relationship. It doesn't really matter.

If you are single because of a recent loss then think of this as a great time to grieve

Do not rush into another relationship. Don't pretend that it is not a hard day. Instead, surround yourself with people who love and care for you. Get as much support and sympathy as possible.

Let's face it

Valentine's Day has become a commercialized holiday through the years. It promotes consumerism. It isn't really about love and relationships anymore. It is all about buying material things for your partner. Think of all the money that you should be saving instead of spending. Sure, this holiday only comes once a year but think about all the other more important special days like Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries. Those you truly need to spend on.

Plan in advance

Make sure that you do not encounter a lot of couples on this trip. Remember that even dining out is not a good idea since many couples might be doing that as well. Do something fun on your own or with a group of your single friends. Pretend that it is not Valentine's Day.

If you are single and you don't want to be then, start to think about ways on creating the relationship that you want

Find different ways to work on becoming a person that your dream partner would fall in love with. You can start therapy. You can even do yoga. Volunteer to do charity work. Create art. Do something new. Do something meaningful. Be a better person. Do something to change the world. Most of all, enjoy your time alone by living your life to the fullest.

Meanwhile, if you are single and you like it, then now is the right time to affirm your choice. Show everyone that you do not mind being alone. Always remember that people who never get married or never have a partner close by should have lives that are worth living. Do not let a couple-driven culture define your choice as wrong. It is not society that should dictate what you want and need. It should depend solely on yourself.
