Anal sex usually describes a penetration of a penis or an object substituting penis into the partner's anal orifice. Anal sex is practiced by both homosexual and heterosexual partners and contrary to the popular belief studies indicate that more heterosexual partners practice it as opposed to homosexuals who prefer other types of sexual stimulation.

Anal sex may lead to orgasm in both men and women. Some argue that this type of sexual intercourse is more pleasing for men due to prostate stimulation that can help reach orgasm. However some women are also capable or reaching their climax through anal sex due to the stimulation of the “legs” of their clitoris. Since it has been proved that clitoris is not simply a “hill” but it is rather prolonged deeper into the female's vagina up to her anus.

There are often complaints from both men and women associated with the pain during anal penetration. Since the rectum is shaped differently in each individual, for some people it may be more painful: men state that they feel some pain during penetration, while a lot of women experience so much pain that they are unable to proceed.

The pleasures of anal sex for men are mostly due to the fact that anus is tighter than vagina while some women state that they can experience an orgasm from anal penetration as it can stimulate parts of female clitoris.

Anal sex has also been a controversial issue throughout human history. When happening between two men it can have some kind of a humiliating influence on the receiving partner, and many male partners prefer other types of sexual stimulation to achieve satisfaction.

Anal sex has also proved to be more dangerous than vaginal penetration in terms of sexually transmitted diseases and some related sexual traumas. Rectal tissue is prone to cuts and tears, which can subsequently lead to an easier and faster spread of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV and other viruses. Producers of condoms are constantly coming up with enhanced brands specially designed for anal penetration, but since rectum does not have any natural lubricant of its own, but rather absorbs any liquid, those condoms tend to fail as well.

Sex toys like dildos of smaller sizes are popular among those who practice anal sex as the penetration does not appear so painful. Doctors recommend exercising extra caution with this type of sexual stimulation and getting to know one's body's likes and dislikes first.
